Bhubaneswar: Pahala police on Thursday arrested a man on charges of cheating a woman of Rs 22 lakh by creating a fake profile on a matrimonial platform.
According to reports, the accused created a fake profile and approached the victim on the pretext of marriage. He reportedly convinced the woman for marriage using his younger brother as a reference to establish his claims. The accused later successfully persuaded the woman to transfer large sums of money based on these assurances.
The accused allegedly took Rs 22 lakh from the woman, claiming it was for marriage expenses and investments in bank policies.
The woman eventually realized she was being cheated and lodged a complaint with the Pahala police.
On basis of the complaint, police arrested the accused and produced him in court.
Police investigation revealed the accused had cheated several other women similarly, maintaining multiple fake relationships while posing as a doctor.
Further investigation is underway to uncover the full extent of the accused’s alleged crimes.
