Bhubaneswar: Nayapalli police arrested a person for allegedly duping five job seekers of Rs 60 lakh by promising them government jobs.
The accused has been identified as Shobhan Ranjan Behera (27), a resident of Orakala under the Airfield police station.
As per reports, Behera, who holds an MCA degree, was running a consultancy firm named Sanjog Consultancy at IRC village in Bhubaneswar.
Behera would lure job seekers by promising them jobs in government banks and central government departments in exchange for money. He would demand Rs 5 lakh for a bank job and Rs 10 lakh for a central government job.
The accused would assure the job seekers that he had connections with high-ranking officials and could secure jobs for them without any competitive exams.
A complaint was filed by Debabrata Karna, a resident of Boudh district, who was promised a job in a state bank in exchange for Rs 6 lakh. Karna alleged that Behera took the money but failed to deliver the job. Further investigation revealed that Behera had similarly duped four other job seekers.
Behera had opened offices in Kolkata, Delhi, and Hyderabad, and was operating his fake consultancy business from these locations. The police are investigating the extent of Behera’s operations and the number of people he may have duped.
Nayapali police registered a case under section 123 of BNS and launched an investigation.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jagmohan Meena has, meanwhile, appealed to anyone who may have been duped by Behera in the Nayapalli police case to come forward and report to the nearest police station.
The DCP, however, laid stress on the importance of verifying the authenticity of job advertisements and the credibility of companies before making any payments.
“With job advertisements being published daily in newspapers and online platforms, the DCP has cautioned job seekers to be vigilant and thoroughly research the company and the job offer before parting with any money”, maintained DCP.
