Fall In Water Level Of Hirakud Dam Raises Concern

Sambalpur: Drastic fall in the water level of Hirakud Dam in Sambalpur district of Odisha has raised concern over water management that is used for irrigation and other purposes.

The water level of Hirakud Dam built across the Mahanadi River has fallen 10 feet below the average. Around this time last year, the water level was 614.12 feet while this year it has dropped to 614.79 feet.

In 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015, and 2016, the Hirakud Dam was hit by a water crisis, but the current situation is likely to break all records.

Experts say the situation will worsen as the water flow from the upper basin of the Mahanadi River in Chhattisgarh is completely closed.

The state water resources department is worried about the situation in April, May, and June as 0.20 feet of water is draining from the reservoir every day.
