Family Alleges Ragging Led To Student’s Death In Kalahandi

Kalahandi: The family of a Plus II student, whose body was found hanging in a hostel on December 19, has accused the authorities of failing to prevent abuse and ragging, which they believe led to her tragic death.

Ramachandra Majhi, the father of the deceased, Tofali Nayak, claims that his daughter endured severe mistreatment inside the hostel the day before her death.

The incident occurred at the Indravati Students Hostel of Maa Manikeshwari University in Bhawanipatna, Kalahandi district. Tofali Nayak, a resident of Birokot village in Rampur block, was discovered dead on December 19.

According to reports, the family alleges that the student was not only tortured and ragged inside the hostel but was also threatened by a boy outside the hostel’s main gate. This incident was reportedly captured on CCTV before her death.

Bhawanipatna MLA Sagar Charan Das, expressed his concerns about the situation.

“This incident reflects serious negligence on the part of the college management. I have seen the CCTV footage and photographs showing the girl being ragged for nearly half an hour. She was subjected to both physical and mental pressure, and an external person even threatened her. This contributed to her mental distress, and it deeply saddens me. We are currently in discussions with the college management, but their responses have been vague, as if they are simply rehearsing answers. I will ensure that all students are safe and adequately supported by the management,” said Das.

The MLA added, “While I have no personal objection against anyone, as a public representative, I insist that everyone must do their job properly. If the authorities fail in their responsibilities, I will take strong action to ensure justice.”
