Bhubaneswar: A person allegedly opened fire on his brother-in-law over a family dispute at Ramachandrapur under Delang police limits in Puri district, on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Narendra Mallick. However, the deceased’s brother Dipak Kumar Singh who is believed to be the accused has absconded following the crime.
According to sources, Narendra used to run a cycle repair shop at Delang Bazaar. Narendra was on his way home when Dipak and his associates were hiding near Luna Bridge to attack the former. They attacked Narendra with an iron rod before opening fire at him.
Locals found Narendra lying in a pool of blood and rushed him to a hospital in Delang. As Narendra’s condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Bhubaneswar-based Capital Hospital where he was declared dead.
Tension ran high at Delang after Narendra’s body reached his village. Demanding compensation for Narendra’s family, villagers held up traffic at Delang Square by keeping Narendra’s body on the road. As a result, vehicular service was disrupted on Khurda-Delang Road for hours.
Upon being informed, Delang police and MLA Ashrit Patnaik rushed to the agitation site and held a discussion with villagers. The villagers lifted the road blockade after MLA assured to provide compensation for the deceased’s family.
Police, meanwhile, detained a person in connection with the murder.
