**Nuapada:** In a tragic incident, a farmer of Bholiasikua village under Khariar block of Nuapada district allegedly committed suicide over crop loss on Saturday evening.
According to the sources, the deceased, Santosh Meher committed suicide by consuming pesticide, as he was unable to pay the loan due to crop damage.
Umakant Meher, the deceased’s relative said, “Santosh was totally dependent on farming and had taken several loans which he was unable to pay. Since two years he was not given insurance for the crop damage, as a result he took this step.”
Chudamani Meher, another relative of deceased said, “He (Santosh) was in depression as the money lenders came to his house everyday for their money.”
Briefing to the media, Ramesh Kumar Jena, BDO said, “As per the Government’s schemes we have given Rs 2,000 to the kin of the deceased under the Harishchandra Yojana. Further steps will be taken after the enquiry is over.”
