Koraput: A 60-year-old farmer in Koraput district died on Monday evening, a day after he consumed insecticide allegedly over crop loss due to low pressure induced rain and the bleak prospects of repaying hand loans taken by him.
Dumar Harijan, a 60-year-old farmer of Nakulguda village under Bhairabsinghpur police limits in Borigumma block of Koraput district was under severe mental stress due to crop loss caused by low pressure induced incessant rain.
“He had cultivated paddy on 3 acres of land– his 1 acre and 2 acres as a sharecropper. The crop was badly damaged due to rains. He had taken loans from villagers and was under stress due to crop failure. He had gone to the field and came back home after consuming pesticide. He was vomiting, we rushed him to the Community Health Centre at Borigumma. He passed away while undergoing treatment,” said Keshav, nephew of the deceased farmer.
Dumar had cultivated paddy on 3 acres of farmland and had allegedly borrowed Rs 70,000.
“My father was under severe mental stress as his crops were badly damaged due to rain. He had also taken loans and was worried over the bleak prospect of repaying. He had gone to the field and came back vomiting. He had consumed insecticide. We brought him to the hospital. He passed away while undergoing treatment,” said deceased farmer’s son Ramesh Harijan.
