Farmers Can Convert ‘Jan Dhan’ Accounts Into General Accounts: Odisha Govt

**Bhubaneswar**: The Odisha Government on Tuesday stated that farmers across the State can now convert their Jan Dhan accounts into savings accounts.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given its nod after the State Government had urged them to do so citing some issues faced by the farmers while transferring paddy procurement money.

“We had a discussion with the RBI officials on how farmers are not able to get the money after selling their paddy and taking notice of it they (RBI) have given permission that farmers can convert their Jan Dhan accounts into general accounts with filling up the Know Your Customer (KYC) forms,” said Bijay Prusti, Deputy Secretary of Food and Supplies Department.

He also said they have asked all District Collectors to inform the cooperative societies which will take initiative in order to help the farmers in this process.

Worth mentioning, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on December 14 had requested Prime Minister Modi to lift restrictions imposed on agricultural credit societies so that they can cater to the credit requirements of farmers facing difficulties due to demonetisation.

“The restriction imposed on Primary Agriculture Cooperative Societies (PACS) to draw Rs 24,000 per week may be lifted so that these organisations can cater to the credit requirements of their farmer members,” the CM had written in a letter to Modi.
