Baripada: A female elephant was electrocuted to death in a field in Nakichua forest under Rasagovindpur range in Mayrubhanj district on Saturday.
Rasgovindpur range officer Ghanashyam Swain said that the elephant is about six- to seven years old. The elephant came in contact with live wire and died in a field. Locals found the pachyderm dead at around 4 AM today and informed the forest officials.
Forester Ashok Maji and Ranger Ghanshyam Singh are at the scene. Divisional Forest Officer A Uma Mahesh and ACF Rabinarayan Mohanty have also reached the spot.
The carcass of the jumbo has been seized for autopsy. An investigation has been launched to ascertain the circumstances that led to the death of the animal.
According to forest officials, the jumbo was separated from a herd of nine elephants from Similipal forest.
