Nilagiri: In a bizarre incident, a female Forest guard was grievously injured by an ailing tusker that sustained grievous bullet injuries after a poacher tried to kill it in Kuldiha Sanctuary in Nilagiri of Odisha’s Balasore district.
According to reports, the woman Forest guard, Sasikala Sahu, was seriously injured when an elephant suddenly attacked her while she and others were trying to tranquillize the ailing tusker for treatment in the local Panchalingeshwar forest. She was rescued by her colleagues in a comatose condition and admitted to the Nilgiris Medical Center. Later, she was transferred to the Balasore Medical Center as her condition deteriorated.
Meanwhile, the tusker has been ill for the last 10 to 12 days and the Forest department has been making all efforts to bring the animal back to health. A special team from Baripada and Keonjhar has reached the Nilagiri and efforts are on by the Forest department to treat the injured tusker, whose condition is deteriorating by the day.
