Bhubaneswar: A female inmate was found dead under mysterious circumstances inside Nimapara Sub-Jail in Puri district, on Monday.
The deceased inmate identified as Madhusmita Baral, a resident of Delang, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in the women’s ward. While jail authorities suspected it a suicide case, her family claimed foul play, alleging murder.
According to report, Madhusmita was being held in connection with the alleged murder of her minor daughter and was awaiting trial. She reportedly used a piece of cloth to hang herself.
According to jail officials, Madhusmita had lunch with other inmates and was sitting in the ward veranda before she was found hanging inside the ward a few minutes later.
Jail authorities rescued and rushed Madhusmita to Nimapara Community Health Centre. As her condition was critical, she was shifted her to Puri District Headquarters Hospital where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
A post-mortem examination is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death and establish whether it was a suicide or if other factors were involved.
