Bhubaneswar: The 15th edition of the Hockey World Cup – christened FIH Odisha Men’s Hockey World Cup 2022-23, will kick off at the Kalinga Stadium here with Argentina taking on South Africa on January 13.
There is much excitement here as hosts India will also take on Spain at the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Odisha’ Rourkela on the same day.
India, especially Odisha, is hosting the prestigious championship for two successive occasions. Last time, Belgium won the 2018 World Cup, while The Netherlands finished runner-up. Australia, which won the title three times earlier, came third in 2018.
Altogether 16 teams are participating in the 15th edition of the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup. The teams are divided into four groups of four teams in each group. The team that finishes at the top in each group will advance to the quarterfinal and the second and third-placed teams from each group will play in the crossover round. The winner of the crossover round will move to the quarters.
