Bhubaneswar: Jharsuguda Police have successfully cracked a string of burglaries by utilising Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Following three burglary incidents on November 2, 4, and 5 in Jharsuguda Police Station and Airport Police Station, police leveraged their CCTV system to identify four suspects who had covered their faces during the crimes.
Thanks to geo-tagged cameras and AI-powered search features, police were able to track the suspects by the colour of their clothing. Further analysis revealed footage of the suspects with uncovered faces, allowing police to feed their photos into the system for face recognition and detection.
The Safe City CCTV system’s AI feature provided crucial instances of the suspects, including footage of them roaming in the area before the burglary. Live location monitoring enabled the investigating team to track the suspects’ movements, said Jharsuguda SP Smit P.Parmar.
According to the tip-off, the team intercepted a bus travelling to Keonjhar and apprehended all four accused namely Sudam Hazara (65), Mudal Paswan (55), Nandu Hazara (55),Umesh Hazara(55) with the recovery of all stolen items in Deogarh district, he added.
While Sudam and Umesh are from Jharkhand, Mudal Paswan (55), Nandu Hazara hail from Bihar, the SP informed.
This is the first time that police used AI technology in crime detection in the district, the SP said, adding that the modern technology helped trace the burglars within golden period.
He said that Jharsuguda police have plans to install more AI-powered cameras at the border points. The AI cameras at Brajrajnagar will also be upgraded soon, he noted.
“Following DGP YB Khurania’s instructions to utilize Artificial Intelligence and futuristic technologies such as face detection, face recognition, and data analytics in crime detection, we initiated efforts that yielded favourable results. We also plan to leverage modern technology in crime investigations,” the SP pointed out.
The breakthrough was made possible by the Artificial Intelligence feature of the Safe City system with the vigilant supervision of IG NR and the timely response of the cyber cell team.
