Bhubaneswar: For the first time in State, nutri-cereals will be included in the food list of jail inmates. Keeping in view the health of the jail inmates, this innovative step has been taken by the Odisha government.
On behalf of Department of Agriculture and Farmers Empowerment, a Millet food tasting festival under the initiative ‘Piloting of Millets in Directorate of Prisons and Correctional Services’ has been organized through Odisha Millets Mission today at Jharpada Special Jail in Bhubaneswar.
Attending the event as Chief Guest, Principal Secretary of Department of Agriculture and Farmers Empowerment, Arabinda Kumar Padhee, emphasised on benefits of nutri-grains. He explained how it is benefiting farmers and how it can help in keeping the jail inmates fit and healthy.
Additional Chief Guest, DIG Prisons, Bhubaneswar, Subhakanta Mishra, informed that there is a plan to set up a special bakery in the jail in order to add nutri-cereals in the diet of the inmates.
Nutrition Officer, DFW, Odisha, Sandhyarani Rout, explained the inmates about the benefits of nutrition and nutri-cereals. Biscuits, buns and bread made of nutri-cereals were distributed to the jail inmates at the Millet Shakti Cafe, a joint venture of Odisha Millets Mission and Mission Shakti, set up inside the jail.
Among the other guests on the occasion, Senior Jail Superintendent and Nodal Officer Biren Kumar Sahoo, Jailor Santoshini Dash, Jail Superintendent Satya Prakash Swain, Joint Director of Agriculture (Millet Mission) Sailendra Kumar Mohanty, and other departmental officers were present.
