Bhubaneswar: In a tragic series of incidents, five persons, including a woman, drowned in separate incidents across Odisha.
In the first incident, two 20-year-old youths from the Madhuban locality drowned at a scenic waterfall in Mayurbhanj district.
The deceased have been identified as Ankit Kumar Bhujabal and Anshuman Nayak.
According to sources, both were bathing in the river when they lost their footing and were swept away by the strong current.
Upon being informed, the local fire department launched a rescue operation. The duo was pulled from the water and rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.
The bodies have been sent to Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital in Baripada for postmortem. Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation.
In a separate incident, a youth drowned in the Brahmani River near Teterkela under the Rourkela area while bathing with friends. While three of his companions managed to escape unharmed, he was swept away by the current. His identity is yet to be confirmed.
Meanwhile, in the third incident reported from the Jalaput reservoir near Lamtaput in Koraput district, the bodies of two youths and a woman were recovered after an extensive search operation by the fire services. The trio had gone missing on Saturday. The deceased have been identified as residents of Banur and Bairpada villages under Padua police station limits.
Police have yet to determine the circumstances that led to their deaths. Police have registered separate cases and further investigations are underway.
