Bhubaneswar: In a shocking revelation, Odisha Government today said that jewellery shops in Odisha were selling fake gold under the guise of Hallmark certification.
Responding to a question by MLA Bibhuti Bhusan Balabantaray, Food Supply and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra said that the discrepancies were detected by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
Patra informed the Assembly that five jewellery shops in Odisha were selling fake gold. The shops include Ambika Jewellers of Kuchinda, Rajshri Jewellers of Kujang, Suna Chandi Jewellers of Puri, Radhakant Jewellers of Bargarh’s Barpali, and Sambalpur Alankar Jewellers.
A case has been registered against Ambika Jewellers, and the licenses of the other four shops have been cancelled. The government took action after discovering that these shops were selling fake gold ornaments without proper registration and hallmark certification.
Minister Patra warned that the government will take stern action against shops selling fake gold.
