Five Killed In Separate Lightning Strikes In Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Lightning strikes claimed five lives, including two women, in Odisha on Sunday.

While two women were killed in separate lightning strikes in Puri district, two others lost their lives in Beapariguda block of Koraput district. Another person was killed in Berga under Doraguda panchayat.

According to reports, there was heavy rain in Gop in Puri district on Sunday afternoon. Saraswati (18) along with her family was on way to her grandfather’s shradh ceremony when lightning struck Saraswati. Another woman named Rina Bhoi (36) of the same village was killed in a lightning strike while grazing goats in the field.

Family members of both the victims rushed them to the Gop Community Centre Hospital (CHH), but the doctors declared both of them ‘brought dead’.

In another incident, two people died due to lightning in an isolated place of Beapariguda block of Koraput district. Kumari Ladgai (20) of Gadaripadar village under Barabadi Panchayat of Beapariguda block was going to another room after putting her son on the bed last evening. At this time there was a lightning strike on the house and she fell unconscious. The family members rushed her to the Ramgiri Primary Healthcare Center where the doctors administered first aid treatment and sent her to Bepariguda Community Health Center (CHH), where she breathed her last.

A JCB helper in Berga under Doraguda panchayat was killed in a lightning strike at around 5.00 pm on Sunday. Jagan Paik (20) of Mankidiyatal village under B Singhpur police limits had gone to a nearby pond after finishing work. He died on his way back to the JCB machine.
