Bhubaneswar: Odisha Water Resource Department Engineer-in-Chief Bhakta Ranjan Mohanty on Friday said the flood situation in the state is under control. “Although numerous people have been marooned following the rise in the water level in major rivers passing through the star, the overall flood situation in Mahanadi, Baitarini, and Brahmani is under control,” he said.
Talking to reporters on Friday, Mohanty asserted that except for two incidents of minor breaches in embankments at Rasulpur and Teramanpur, the flood situation in the state is under control. Once the water levels recede, the violations will be repaired, he added.
“Currently, the water level at Mundali is below 7 lakh cusecs and it does not pose any significant threat. The peak flood is likely to pass through Kendrapara on Friday afternoon as no rainfall has occurred in the upstream and downstream areas.
Mohanty, however, said that they will open more sluice gates of the Hirakud dam to maintain the water level in the reservoir. The inflow of water into the dam is over 4 lakh cusecs and the water level now stands at 615.5 feet. While two dam gates were opened on Thursday, five more were opened on Friday to release excessive water inflow, Mohanty said.
