Flood Threat Looms In Baitarani, Subarnarekha Rivers Due To Incessant Rains

Balasore: A flood threat looms over Bhadrak and Balasore districts in Odisha due to the swelling of rivers Baitarani and Subarnarekha. Heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas has caused the water levels to rise, prompting the district administrations to issue alerts and take precautionary measures.

The Baitarani River at Akhuapada has crossed the warning level, flowing at 18.42 meters against the warning level of 17.83 meters and the distress signal level of 18.33 meters. The Balasore district administration has alerted residents living downstream, warning them of a possible flood-like situation, which could be the sixth this season.

Similarly, the Subarnarekha River’s water level is increasing at various places due to heavy downpour upstream. As many as 5,000 cusecs of water have been released from the Galudiha barrage in Jharkhand. This release is likely to cause a rise in the river’s water level, potentially leading to flooding. According to officials, the floodwater is expected to cross near Rajghat by tomorrow evening, with areas like Baliapal and Bhograi likely to be affected.

Heavy rains in Jharkhand, triggered by a low-pressure system, have necessitated the water release from the Galudih barrage. However, the Water Resources department official has indicated that the water level is unlikely to cross the danger signal. The situation is being closely monitored, and necessary precautions are being taken to mitigate the impact of the potential flood
