**Bhubaneswar: ** In the aftermath of the recent severe cyclonic storm ‘Titli’, the torrential rains triggered by it and also the damaged caused, Odisha Government has now tightened up its belt to make the State more disaster resilient.
This was decided today at the high level State Executive Committee meeting in the Secretariat here chaired by Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi.
Even though the last meeting was held in July, various vital issues were discussed today following the situation that has arisen out of recent cyclone, incessant rains and flood.
Briefing media soon after the meeting, Odisha Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Bishnupada Sethi said, “Today we decided how to make Odisha more disaster resilient.”
He explained, “Odisha is a cycone prone State. Normally, our preparedness is meant for the coastal area. We observed that climatic change has also its effects on the adjoining districts of the coastal districts. Gajapati’s recent devastation is a case in point. Similarly, Kandhamal, Boudh, Nayagarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, etc. Hence, these districts also need disaster preparedness as observed from the recent cyclone. Thus, we’ll take requisite steps.”
“We’ll look into the disaster preparedness of those districts, like number of cyclone shelters, for which planning will be made accordingly,” he added.
He stated further, “There have been landslides in Gajapati district in 2004, 1998 besides this year’s in the recent cyclone and torrential rains triggered by it. Decision was taken today for its mapping.”
“Focus will on the disaster resilient infrastructure. The Finance Department has approved of the recommendation made by the Rural Development (RD) Department to use latest technology for the purpose,” the Odisha SRC informed.
