Bhubaneswar: The Forest Department has warned of strict action against the use of snakes in Danda Yatra celebrations in Ganjam district. The Regional Chief Conservator of Forests, Berhampur Circle, has directed all Divisional Forest Officers (DFOs) to take legal action against those violating wildlife protection laws.
The letter, addressed to DFOs, highlights that some committees organizing social dramas during Danda Yatra are violating the Wildlife Protection Act, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and BNS 2023 by displaying wild animals, including snakes.
The department has instructed officials to take legal action against offenders and conduct awareness programs among committees and villages to stop the practice.
The Forest Department has also advised DFOs to attend meetings with District Collectors and Superintendents of Police to educate organisers about the laws. Violations can lead to penalties under Section 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act, Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and Section 325 of BNS 2023.
The Danda Yatra festival is set to begin in March, and the department aims to curb the use of snakes and other wild animals in the celebrations.
