Bhubaneswar: Former Director General of Odisha Police Dr RP Sharma on Thursday took charge as the new Member of Lokayukta on the very day of handing over charge to his successor BK Sharma.
The former police chief had opted for VRS (voluntary retirement scheme) after the sad demise of his wife during the general elections this year.
He had to avail leave of absence from the Election Commission of India for about a month then. Even though he rejoined amid the election period, his domestic constraints compelled him to opt for retiring from the top cop post as well as government service.
As Government of Odisha needed Dr Sharma’s service to the people of Odisha, his name was recommended by the Lokayukta Selection Committee comprising the Chief Justice of Orissa High Court, Chief Minister, Leader of Opposition and others, sources further stated.
It was after Odisha Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal formally nodded to the proposal of Lokayukta Selection Committee, Dr Sharma was duly selected as the new Member of Lokayukta.
