Bhubaneswar: Former Jagatsinghpur MP Trilochan Kanungo passed away in a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on Friday at 7.00 am. He was 83 years.
Trilochan was thrice elected MLA and once as MP. The politician was elected to the Lok Sabha as a member of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD).
Kanungo was born at Badamulei in Cuttack district on November 24, 1940. Known for his straightforwardness, he had won the then Govindpur Assembly seat thrice and the Jagatsinghpur Lok Sabha seat once.
Kanungo was also Mayor of Cuttack City twice. During his political days, he used to write columns on the financial health of the state.
According to reports, Kanungo was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar since March 30. He breathed his last this morning after battling for life for over three weeks.
As the news of his demise spread, condolences poured in from all quarters.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has expressed deep grief over the passing away of Trilochan Kanungo. In a condolence message, Chief Minister Patnaik described Kanungo as an eminent parliamentarian, economist, and social worker. “He was a friend of the common people and devoted himself to social service throughout his life,” the Chief Minister said.
Kanungo has done a lot of remarkable work as an MP, Deputy Speaker, Chairman of the Second State Finance Commission, and Chairman of Cuttack Municipality. The Chief Minister said that Kanungo will always be remembered for his selfless service.
The Chief Minister has announced that Kanungo’s funeral will be accorded with state standards.
