Bhubaneswar: Retired IPS officer and former Odisha DGP John Nayak succumbed to COVID-19 last night.
Incumbent DGP Abhay paid virtual tribute to his senior. Taking to Twitter, Abhay said that Nayak’s journey from a remote tribal village of Phulbani to the rank of DG was inspirational. His tweet added that his predecessor was humble, accessible and compassionate.

John Nayak, born in 1942, hails from Kandhamal district. After his schooling, he graduated with honours from Ravenshaw College, Cuttack and obtained MA and LL.B from Utkal University.
He joined IPS in 1965 and retired in 2002 as the Director General of Police. He held several important posts in Odisha Police Department and was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious service in 1995 and President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2002.
