Bhubaneswar: A vigilance court in Sambalpur has convicted a former Traffic Sub-Inspector, Laxmi Narayan Putel, in a corruption case. Putel, who retired from service, has been sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment and fined.
The case dates back to when Putel demanded and took a bribe of Rs 5,000 from an auto driver to release his seized vehicle and drop charges against him. The Odisha Vigilance had charge-sheeted Putel under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Following the conviction, the Odisha Vigilance will move to stop Putel’s pension, a move aimed at ensuring accountability among public servants. The conviction serves as a deterrent against corruption in public service.
