Bhubaneswar: A team of police today seized huge quantities of ganja from an Innova car near Chheligodhuli Toll Gate area on National Highway 49 near Jashipur in Mayurbhanj district.
Police also arrested four persons allegedly involved in the illegal trade. The accused are Dillip Kumar Kanhar (27), Tita Kanhar (28), Jagannath Kanhar (20), Sushanta Kumar Kanhar (37). All the accused belong to Kandhamal.
The team led by Sub-Inspector Parsuram Jena was on day patrolling duty in view of the Bharat Bandh call when they received credible information about a contraband-laden vehicle heading towards Bisoi from Karanjia.
Upon verification, 44 sealed packets of ganja were found hidden in custom-made compartments below the rear seat and in the doors of the vehicle. The driver and three co-passengers were detained on the spot.
During interrogation, the accused revealed that they had procured the ganja from Phulbani and were transporting it to Baripada for sale.
The seizure was made in the presence of the Tahsildar, Jashipur (Executive Magistrate), and independent witnesses.
The Innova car used in the transportation of the contraband items has been seized.
