Koraput: In a tragic incident, four minors in the age-group between two and nine years were killed after being swept in Kolab river at Lamtaput in Koraput district on Monday.
The deceased have been identified as Susanta Bhoi (2), Laxmi Bhoi (9), Sabita Majhi (8) and Sanjay Bhoi (9). According to sources, Susanta was the first to be swept by the current, following which Sabita rushed to save the two-year-old.
However, Sabita too, was pulled by the flow and drowned. On noticing the two children struggling, Laxmi and Sanjay jumped into water to rescue their friends, but all of them were swept away.
The incident occurred when the children, belonging to three families from Parajakhudubi village were playing on the river bank. They had accompanied their parents, who were tilling the farms nearby.
Locals rushed to the spot and retrieved the bodies from the river.
The local police registered a case and started investigation into the incident. The bodies of the deceased have been sent to Koraput District Headquarters Hospital for autopsy.
