Bhubaneswar: Town police arrested a fraudster on charges of cheating job aspirants on the pretext of employment in Balasore district, on Monday.
According to sources, the accused Sashikant Das of Kendrapada district runs a diploma training centre near ITI Square in Balasore town. He allegedly collected money from students by promising them with jobs. His fraud came to the fore after the job-seekers did not get the jobs promised by Das even after paying money. Some victims caught Das while the latter was trying to flee and subsequently handed him over to the police.
One of the victims who holds a diploma degree in engineering said, “Das had promised to give me a government job in a month. He had also made it clear that he would return my money if I did not get a job within the said time. I had paid Rs 2 lakh in cash to Das. When I failed to get the job, I wanted to get my money back. However, he did not pick up my calls and closed the shutter of his office much to my dismay. Today, we caught him and took him to Balasore Town Police Station.”
“Das and his wife operate an office near ITI Square in Balasore. They asked me to pay Rs 2.5 lakh to secure a government job, claiming I had qualified for a position in the RTO office. They showed me an appointment letter. Lured by them, I paid them Rs 2.5 lakh via PhonePe. And now I am running from pillar to post to get back my money. Today, we caught him and called the police to help us recover our money,” said another victim.
Meanwhile, Das is being kept at the Town Police station for interrogation.
