Bhubaneswar: A patient allegedly died in a freak mishap on Nilagiri Sub-Divisional Hospital premises in Balasore district on Tuesday due to the alleged carelessness of hospital authorities.
The deceased Karan Singh, a resident of Ambajhar village, was admitted to the hospital five days ago due to illness. Today, he went to use the toilet. Since the toilet inside the hospital premises was unclean, Karan went to use the toilet outside the premises, sources said.
Wires from a broken cable were lying on the ground near the toilet when Karan’s leg was entangled in wires. As a result, he fell and his head hit the drain.
Singh became unconscious and was rushed back to the hospital on a stretcher. However, a doctor declared him dead after examination.
Meanwhile, the deceased’s family alleged that the hospital’s toilet was unclean and Singh was forced to use the toilet outside the hospital premises, leading to the tragic incident. The live wire from a broken cable lying on the ground near the toilet was part of the hospital’s electrical system.
Nilagiri Hospital In-Charge Sarojini Pradhan said, “An investigation will be launched to ascertain the circumstances that led to Singh’s death. Contractors looking after electric works inside the hospital campus were told to remove the wires from the spot to avoid any untoward incident on the hospital campus, but they did not carry out the order.”
