Bhubaneswar: In the heart of Bhawanipatna town, the tale of Rajendra Patra embodies the transformative power of compassionate governance and dedicated public service.
A dedicated Garima sanitation worker under Odisha’s pioneering scheme for the safety and dignity of core sanitation workers, Rajendra has spent over 30 years sweeping the streets of his town before dawn—often unseen and underappreciated.
As a contractual employee earning a modest Rs 9,000–Rs 10,000 monthly, he has shouldered the responsibility of supporting a family of five, including his wife who battles paralysis, making a secure home not just a wish but a vital need.
That need was met through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) (PMAY-U), a flagship housing initiative. The pucca house sanctioned to his family under the scheme has delivered safety, stability, and comfort—especially crucial for his wife’s medical condition.
It offers his children a solid foundation and restores Rajendra’s sense of dignity after years of tireless labor. In a heart-warming recognition of his unwavering commitment, Rajendra received a rare honour: an invitation from President Droupadi Murmu to attend the prestigious ‘At Home’ reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Republic Day-2026. Alongside other unsung heroes from Odisha, including a disaster management volunteer, he was celebrated for his essential contributions to public hygiene and society.
Facilitated by the state government, the journey also marked another milestone—Rajendra’s first-ever flight to Delhi, which he described as “like a dream.
“This recognition underscores a powerful truth: service transcends boundaries, and dedication knows no caste or class. The Odisha government, through schemes like Garima and PMAY(U), remains steadfast in extending benefits to eligible sanitation workers, ensuring inclusion, welfare, and respect for those who serve daily.
