Cuttack: The Orissa High Court has directed a series of restrictions to curb noise pollution and ensure public safety during upcoming festivals in Cuttack.
The court, while hearing a public interest litigation on civic issues, ordered a ban on noise-polluting firecrackers, loud music, and electric gates during the festive season.
The High Court specified that noise levels must not exceed 65 decibels during pujas. To enforce this, the Cuttack District Magistrate and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) have been instructed to strictly monitor compliance. Additionally, the use of only four sound boxes will be permitted for each celebration.
The court has also prohibited the construction of arches (torans) on roads and imposed a complete ban on electric gates. However, certain gates may be allowed under specific conditions, which the District Magistrate has been directed to finalize before the upcoming Dussehra preparation meeting with puja committees this Sunday.
The directives will remain in force from Ganesh Puja through Bali Yatra, covering the peak festive period in Cuttack.
Moreover, before permits are issued, every puja pandal must ensure fire safety, electrical safety, and adherence to the High Court’s restrictions. The Cuttack DCP has been tasked with overseeing enforcement throughout the celebrations.
These measures come as the city gears up for the festive season, with decorations planned but under strict safety and environmental guidelines.
