Bhubaneswar: When hope seems lost, medical science steps in to defy the odds. Would you believe that a person whose heart stopped beating for almost two hours can be brought back to life? Unthinkable as it may seem, the Bhubaneswar wing of All India Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has made this incredible feat a reality.
In a stunning display of medical expertise and compassion, the dedicated team at AIIMS Bhubaneswar has achieved a remarkable feat by saving the life of a 24-year-old man through the advanced Extracorporeal Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (eCPR) procedure. The hospital has, indeed, shattered the boundaries of medical possibilities. The team of skilled professionals, armed with cutting-edge technology, has successfully revived Subhakant Sahu whose heart had stopped beating for an astonishing 120 minutes.
As per reports, Sahu was rushed to AIIMS Bhubaneswar in critical condition with heart failure. Shortly after arrival, he suffered a cardiac arrest. Despite 40 minutes of conventional CPR, there was no cardiac activity, leaving the medical team at a crucial decision point: declare death or attempt the cutting-edge eCPR procedure.
Led by doctor Srikant Behera, Intensivist and Adult ECMO specialist, the team initiated Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) 80 minutes after the cardiac arrest. Following 40 minutes of eCPR, Sahu’s heart finally resumed beating, albeit with an irregular rhythm. Over the next 30 hours, his heart function improved significantly, and he was successfully weaned off ECMO after 96 hours.
The multidisciplinary team addressed several other life-threatening complications during the process.
Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, hailed the team’s remarkable achievement, noting, “AIIMS Bhubaneswar has consistently pushed the boundaries of healthcare excellence by seamlessly merging medical science with cutting-edge technology. This breakthrough is a shining testament to our unwavering commitment to saving lives and driving medical innovation.”
His mother’s voice trembled with emotion as she expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the team for saving her son from near death.
