Gajapati Woman’s Noble Act in Death: Abala Pal Donates Organs, Saves Lives

Berhampur: In a moving example of humanity and selflessness, 54-year-old Abala Pal from Khariguma village under Mohana police limits in Gajapati district has given the greatest gift of all — the gift of life — through organ donation after her death.

Abala, an unmarried woman, met with a tragic road accident while on her way to Cheligada village under R. Udayagiri police station last Sunday to attend her sister’s wedding. Her two-wheeler was struck by another vehicle, leaving her critically injured.

Family members rushed her first to Cheligada, then to Chandragiri Hospital, and subsequently to MKCG Medical College & Hospital, Berhampur. Due to severe head injuries, she was later shifted to a hospital in Bhubaneswar for advanced treatment. Despite doctors’ efforts, she succumbed to her injuries on Friday.

In a remarkable gesture of compassion, Abala’s family consented to donate her kidneys and liver, helping save the lives of others in need. Her act has not only given a second chance at life to several patients but also brought immense pride and respect to her family and community.

Her mortal remains were brought back to her native village, Khariguma, in a government-arranged ambulance. As her body arrived, an air of grief enveloped the village, yet it was mixed with admiration for her noble act. In recognition of her selfless contribution, the Mohana Police provided a guard of honour as instructed by the government.

Speaking about the gesture, the local police station officer said, “As per government directives, we paid tribute to her extraordinary act of humanity by offering a Guard of Honour.”

Family members expressed pride in Abala’s final act of generosity, saying they hoped it would inspire others to consider organ donation. The family has also submitted an application to the government seeking support and assistance in light of their loss.

Abala Pal’s legacy now lives on — not only through the lives she helped save but also through the powerful message her selfless decision sends to society: that even in death, one can give the gift of life.
