Bhubaneswar: Even after a person passes away and his earthly journey comes to an end, a remarkable chapter of life can still continue through the generosity of organ donation. In the quiet stillness of death, vital organs — the heart that once beat with love, the liver that sustained life, and the kidneys that kept the body balanced — can be gently harvested and transplanted into waiting recipients.
Ramesh, a 63-year-old resident of Gajapati district’s Mohana area, has set a shining example of this selfless act. Known locally as a kind-hearted farmer and social worker, Ramesh met with a tragic road accident on March 31 while riding his bike near the Badasinbha village area. He sustained severe injuries and was first rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur before being shifted to a private hospital in Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh. He was declared brain dead.
Following his death, his family made a noble decision to donate his organs so that he could live on through others. His liver, kidneys, and heart were successfully harvested and transplanted, offering a fresh lease of life to multiple patients in need.
His son, Basant Kumar Ranasingh, expressed pride in the family’s choice, saying: “Even though our father has left us, we are proud that his organs have been donated.”
Ramesh is survived by seven daughters and a son. His sudden demise cast a pall of gloom over the entire region. On the day his mortal remains reached the village, the district administration accorded him full state honours, including a Guard of Honour as per Odisha government guidelines for organ donors.
Ramesh’s supreme sacrifice will remain an inspiring and memorable example of compassion and selflessness for years to come. His story underscores the life-saving power of organ donation and encourages more people to pledge their organs. Organ donation not only saves lives but also turns personal tragedy into hope for many. Ramesh’s family has shown extraordinary courage and humanity in their hour of grief.
