Berhampur: In a major crackdown, police arrested 17 gamblers, including several well-known businessmen, from a gambling den in Berhampur late last night. More than ₹5 lakh in cash was seized during the raid.
The raid was carried out at Lakshmi Nrusingha Sahi under the jurisdiction of Bada Bazar police station.
Acting on a tip-off, the police raided the gambling hub where multiple businessmen and bookies were allegedly involved in high-stakes betting.
The raid was led by Town SDPO Priya Ranjan Chhotray and Bada Bazar IIC Baba Shankar Saraf, along with other staff from the police station. All 17 accused have been detained for questioning, and further investigation is underway to determine the extent of the illegal network.
Police sources said the action is part of a broader campaign to curb organized gambling in Berhampur, especially during the festive season when such activities tend to rise.
