Koraput: Jeypore Town police have seized 578 kg ganja worth around Rs 60 lakh while it was being smuggled in a truck carrying puffed rice.
Jeypore SDPO Arup Abhisekh Behera has informed that late on Sunday night during patrolling, Jeypore Town police intercepted a speeding truck bearing a UP registration number plate near Gandhi Chhak.
On seeing the policemen, the truck driver and helper taking advantage of darkness fled the spot after abandoning the truck near Hatapada, Behera added.
The SDPO said that on examination it was found that the truck was carrying ganja.
“As per provisions of the NDPS Act, search and seizure of the truck bearing UP registration was carried out in the presence of Executive Magistrate. 578 kg ganja was seized. Ganja was packed in bags and stacked amidst bags of ‘mudhi’ (puffed rice),” Behera elaborated.
Further investigation in the matter is underway, he added.
