Bhubaneswar: Eminent litterateur, social activist and former senior executive of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) Ghanashyam Karan passed away due to prolonged old age ailments.  He was 88.

Ghanashyam was undergoing treatment for the past few days.  He breathed his last at his Bhubaneswar-based residence on March 28.

Known for maintaining the highest sense of honesty and integrity in the Central Public Sector Enterprises, Ghanshyam is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters.

Born in 1937 at Baruna village under Rajakanika block in Kendrapara district,  Ghanashyam was quite famous for his distinctive personality at Rajkanika.  He took birth in a poor family where access to education was a distant dream. However, his humble background did not deter him from dreaming big. He passed post-graduation and law degree with flying colours and joined SAIL thanks to his hard work, strong determination and grit.

Apart from being a senior executive of SAIL and a social activist, his love for literature had made him carve a niche for himself as an author. He had penned five books mostly on religion and life philosophy. His passing left a deep chasm in the field of literature.

To his friends and acquaintances, he was known to be a man with exceptional qualities of head and heart.

Ghanshyam took voluntary retirement as a senior executive in SAIL before venturing into social service.

His wife Kunjalata, sons Amitabh and Jajati, daughter-in-laws Sharmista and Rojalin, daughters Kabita, Sabita, Babita and son-in-laws Sanjay, Sagar, Prabhat and grandchildren were at his bedside when he left for the heavenly abode.

His mortal remains were taken to Puri Swargadwar where his last rites were performed on March 28. His eldest son Amitabh lit the funeral pyre in the presence of his family members and admirers.
