Cuttack: A huge stingray fish weighing about 300 kilograms was caught alive today in a fishing net set in Kandala river at Balasuni in Niali block here.
As per reports, a few local fishermen had set up fishing nets at Kundimuha bridge when they spotted a giant fish caught in their net. It was later identified to be a stingray or locally known as ‘Sankucha’.
The news spread like wildfire and soon locals thronged to get a glimpse of the fish. The fishermen said that this is the first time anyone in their locality has seen a live stingray.
Upon getting information, forest department officials arrived and rescued the fish. They set it back in waters.
Stingrays, from shark family, are common in coastal tropical and subtropical marine waters throughout the world; with some even belonging to deep sea.
