Bhubaneswar: A Class IX girl student went missing in the Mahanadi River after she jumped into it from over the Chaurapur bridge in Sambalpur.

The incident happened in the morning. Eyewitnesses said that she came on her bicycle with a bag and mobile phone. Keeping all these on the bridge, she jumped off the bridge and went missing.

She was Arita Bisi, of Budharaja High School. She had got free admission in the school and was provided with free books and study materials as she was an orphan, Headmistress Subhrata Pati said. She was staying at her relative’s house.

The reason for taking such an extreme step is yet to be known. The fire brigade team has launched a search operation in the swollen river with the help of a powerboat.

Police seized her cycle, school bag, mobile phones and started an investigation.
