Bhubaneswar: Diwali’s joyful festivities should not come at the cost of our planet’s well-being. Unfortunately, the celebration often leads to a significant spike in air pollution. This year, let’s prioritize environmental responsibility alongside merriment. Adopt these eco-friendly practices to minimize air pollution and ensure a safer, healthier Diwali for all.

Go for eco-friendly diyas and decorations

This Diwali, revisit the ancient Indian tradition of using clay diyas, which are naturally biodegradable and compostable. Unlike plastic or metal diyas, these eco-friendly options don’t contribute to pollution or waste. Opting for handmade clay diyas or purchasing them from local artisans also supports sustainable livelihoods.

Natural decorations are another way to make your Diwali celebrations more eco-friendly. Ditch plastic decorations and instead use fragrant flowers, leaves, and branches to create stunning arrangements. You can also craft paper or fabric decorations to add a personal touch or repurpose old items like jars or bottles to create unique centrepieces. By choosing natural materials, you’ll reduce plastic waste and create a healthier environment.

Traditional clay diyas are biodegradable making them a great choice as they don’t contribute to pollution. Avoid plastic decorations and replace them with natural materials like flowers, leaves, and fabric to adorn your home. This way, you’re reducing the plastic waste that often ends up polluting the environment.

Use green firecrackers

While firecrackers are a Diwali staple, they’re also major polluters. Consider opting for green crackers, which produce fewer emissions and harmful chemicals, are made from natural materials like plant-based fuels, and reduce air pollution and minimize health risks. Alternatively, explore other festive activities like singing traditional songs or dancing with family and friends, hosting game nights or puzzle parties, or organizing community events or volunteering for environmental initiatives.

Choose Eco-friendly Gifts

When it comes to gift-giving, rethink your approach this Diwali. Choose organic products, handmade items, or plants, and avoid gifts with excessive packaging or plastic wrapping. Gifting experiences like yoga classes, cooking workshops, or eco-friendly tours are thoughtful and sustainable options.

To further reduce your environmental impact, consider using LED lights or solar-powered decorations to reduce energy consumption. Prepare traditional Diwali sweets using natural ingredients and minimal packaging, and encourage family and friends to adopt eco-friendly practices. By embracing these eco-friendly traditions, you’ll create a healthier, sustainable Diwali celebration.

Plant A Tree

This Diwali, offset your carbon footprint and nurture a greener future by planting a tree. This meaningful activity not only gives back to the environment but also becomes a delightful family bonding experience. Trees play a vital role in balancing our ecosystem, absorbing harmful carbon dioxide and releasing life-giving oxygen, thereby improving air quality and promoting healthier living.
