Berhampur: Over Rs 1.2 crores cash and gold biscuits were seized following a checking for ganja at Lanjipalli in Berhampur area of Ganjam district on Tuesday.
Reportedly, a team of Excise officials led by Inspector Hrudyachandra Samanta had intercepted a government bus. During checking, he found some passengers carrying a bag with lot of cash.
On being informed by the Excise officials, Baidyanathpur Police reached the spot and arrested a man named Bharat Gokhe Naik, a gold merchant from Maharashtra.
Police seized the cash and found it to be of the value of Rs 1,21,97,000 in Rs 500 denomination. Further investigation by Police revealed that the cash had been given in exchange of gold.
Police detected that one Anand Subuti , owner of Anand Jewellery of Berhampur had paid the cash to the suspect in exchange of cash.
Around 2.2 kg gold biscuit was seized from him and both the persons were not able to produce any suitable documents regarding either the cash or the gold.
Police have seized the cash and the gold. It will be handed to Income Tax department after proper documentation. Further investigation would be done by Income tax department.
