Cuttack: As Commissionerate Police had recently requested the DGP for a probe by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Odisha Crime Branch as arrested Golden Baba’s case has inter-state and inter-district ramifications, DGP passed the necessary order today.

Total four cases were registered against Golden Baba alias Jyotiranjan Beura by Chandrasekharpur, Laxmisagar and Saheed Nagar police stations while EOW has taken over two major frauds registered by Chandrasekharpur and Laxmisagar police stations.

Briefing media, Odisha Crime Branch ADG Santosh Kumar Upadhyay said, “The case is being investigated by Commissionerate Police since 2018. They have arrested him (Golden Baba alias Jyotiranjan Beura) and have also seized various items, also interrogated him on remand.”

He informed, “During the interrogation, the Commissionerate Police came to know that his case needed effective investigation for proper prosecution. So far time, efforts and energy are concerned, Economic Offences Wing (EOW) and STF are specialized agencies of State Government. Hence, we have taken over the case on behalf of EOW due to economic offences.”

He further informed, “His two main offences include approximately Rs 12.04 crores and 4.5 crores of fraud. Also there is a cheque fraud besides other allegations. Hence, EOW will look into all angles and aspects of the case. EOW is competent to deal with it as most of the cases tried in the courts have ended in a record of 100% conviction.” Notably, the Commissionerate police on December 31 arrested last year the alleged fraudster ‘Golden Baba’ here for allegedly duping a resident of Barbil in Keonjhar district.

The Chandrasekharpur police arrested him following interrogation at the police station.

Besides wearing gold jewelleries, Golden Baba reportedly owns four luxury cars. While he was earlier residing in Niladri Vihar area, he was spotted later in Kalarahanga on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar before fleeing to Delhi.
