Bhubaneswar: The weather system brewing in the Andaman Sea and adjoining Bay of Bengal is very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm on May 10. Special Relief Commissioner-cum-Development Commissioner said that development will become clearer by Tuesday. Whether the system will recurve towards northeast or southwards, can be known once the storm comes close to the coast, (approximately around 250 kms), he said.
“The Government agencies are fully prepared and geared up to face any eventuality. We have had meetings with telecom companies, food and civil supplies department, SSEPD department, energy and agriculture departments to facilitate evacuation, restoration and keeping the supply chain system intact,” said Jena.
“The SRC on Thursday asked Collectors of 18 districts to come up with a roadmap for facing the upcming natural event. We are finetuning are strategy and the Collectors will be ready with their plan by Saturday. The deployment of relief and rescue teams will be done accordingly,” the SRC added.
The cyclone is likely to touch land near south Odisha or north Andhra Pradesh coast. However, no confirmation is available about landfall. On May 10 and 11, the districts Ganjam, Puri, Khurda and Jagatsinghpur are very likely to receive heavy rainfall. “We might have more information by Saturday,” Jena added.
