Bhubaneswar: In a move to prevent deaths caused by lightning strikes, the Odisha government has decided to adopt traditional methods, including extensive planting and protection of palm trees.
The decision taken in September 2023, is based on the fact that palm trees act as natural conductors during lightning strikes and can help save lives. The Forest Department is now set to enforce this decision strictly.
The initiative was announced by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Debidutta Biswal on Monday.
“According to the plan, the department will plant approximately 1.9 million palm trees across the state during the 2024-25 financial year. Four palm trees will be planted near the boundary of each forest block, with a total budget of Rs 7 crore allocated for the project,” Biswal said.
To protect the existing palm trees, permission from the Forest Department will be required to cut down any even on private premises. Biswal warned that strict action would be taken against those who violate this order.
Earlier, there was no need for permission to fell palm trees on private land. However, the lack of regulation led to a significant decline in palm trees, especially in rural areas. With an increase in fatalities due to lightning strikes, particularly during the northwesterly and rainy seasons, the government has reinstated the restriction on felling palm trees, Biswal added.
