Groom Among 5 Arrested As Marriage Procession Flouts COVID Norms In Ganjam

Berhampur: A day after a gross violation of COVID-19 guidelines was noticed in a marriage procession inside a hotel premises in Gopalpur area of Ganjam district, Berhampur Police arrested five persons including the groom on Saturday.

SP Pinak Mishra informed that the marriage procession was organized inside the Hotel premises disregarding the compulsory use of masks and flouting social distancing norms. A case in this regard under section 188/269/270 of IPC R/W Sec 3 of Epidemic Diseases Act and 34 of IPC has been registered at Gopalpur Police Station.

While five persons have been arrested, two vehicles used in the marriage procession have been seized. The said hotel where the procession was held has also been sealed by the district administration.

Earlier, the Ganjam Collector had tweeted that a fine of Rs 50,000 has been collected in connection with the violation and FIR filed against both parties.

It is worthwhile to mention that any social gathering, including a wedding, is not allowed to have any more than 50 people with each one of them wearing a face mask. Also, social distancing and hand hygiene has to be strictly maintained.

It was also reported that the guests had arrived from several nearby municipalities. This was in direct violation of the Ganjam Collector’s order to not venture beyond 1 km of the place of residence.
