Gunrunning Racket Busted In Cuttack, 4 Including Music Album Director Arrested

Cuttack: In its drive against anti-socials before the upcoming festive season of Durga Puja, Commissionerate Police in Cuttack have busted a gunrunning racket today with the arrest of four hardcore criminals.

Police have seized two country-made pistols, a revolver and 16 rounds of live ammunition from their possession.

The accused have been identified as Gyana Ranjan Sahoo (40) alias Naba of Jhinkiria under Cuttack Sadar police limits, Prakash Rout (35) alias Papu of Shankarpur Diha Sahi under Badambadi police limits, Pramod Kumar Rout (43) of Balabhadrapur Bali Sahi under Badambadi police limits and Susanta Parida (49) of Gatirout Patana under Chauliaganj police limits.

“Acting on reliable information that a known anti-social Naba alias Gyana Ranjan was moving suspiciously in Jhanjirmangala area, a team of the Badambadi police station responded and detained this person,” informed Cuttack DCP Prateek Singh today.

Police have recovered a 7.65 mm country-made pistol loaded with 02 rounds of live ammunition from his possession, Singh added.

The Cuttack DCP said that upon interrogation of Naba, he revealed that he was supplied with the arms by one Prakash Rout alias Papu an associate of one Tukuna Swain who was earlier forwarded in connection with an arms supplies case.

He further revealed that he had supplied arms to two other persons-Pramod Kumar Rout and Susant Parida, the DCP added.

“We have also recovered a 9 mm pistol and a sixer revolver from these persons,” Singh told reporters.

Police said that upon verification it was ascertained that the accused persons had increased their criminal network and were more active now for clandestine supply and sale of firearms and ammunition to anti-socials/criminals of Cuttack and other districts under the direction and conspiracy of arms dealer Tukuna Swain of Angul.

Police have come to know that the objective of the accused persons was to augment the devastating effect of criminality in every nook and corner of the society by spreading the arms trading network for heavy earnings as well as for creating an atmosphere of fear in order to extort ‘Dada Bati’ from businessmen, contractors, Balighat etc during this Puja season.

Police stated that the accused persons will be forwarded to court, while further investigation in the matter is underway.
