Cuttack: A hardcore criminal identified as Babul alias Sachin Pawar (26) was injured in an exchange of fire with police at Naraj Chhak market area in Cuttack in the wee hours of Wednesday.
Reportedly in the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, Choudwar police and special squad in a joint raid had nabbed eight criminals who had assembled to commit dacoity in a jewellery shop near Choudwar College. Two to three criminals had been able to flee from the spot by firing at the police team. As such two police personnel had sustained injuries in the attack.
In the course of investigation, a special team was formed under Choudwar Police Station IIC to apprehend the absconding criminals. At about 4 am today, the team proceeded towards Naraj Chhack market area after having information that the absconding accused persons were concealing in an abandoned market Godown building.
The police team located the area and rounded up the accused persons. Seeing the police team they fired in order to escape again. Despite several warnings to surrender, they continued to fire three rounds aiming to the raiding party.
Finding imminent danger to his life and his team, Choudwar Police Station IIC opened two round of controlled fire from his service pistol aiming below to the waist of the accused persons in exercise of his right to private defence in order to immobilize them.
The bullets hit to the right leg of Babul as a result of which he fell down at the spot with the pistol. But the other two accused persons managed to escape during the exchange of firing. The police staff immediately de-gripped the pistol from Babul and as he was sustaining bleeding injury on his right leg, immediately shifted him to SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack for his treatment.
During this scuffle, police personnel ASI Darabari Nayak, Constable Anil Kumar Das and Constable Biswaranjan Das of the raiding party also sustained injuries. The investigation of the case is in progress and the team is conducting raid to round up other accused persons.
All the accused persons are involved in organized crime and in a habit of posing themselves as Police and thereby looting the gold ornaments from the unsuspecting persons, doing rampant burglary and dacoity throughout India and specifically in Puri, Rourkela, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Talcher, Angul, Baripda and Berhampur cities of Odisha.
