Have Drugs Led To Increase In Twin City’s Crime Rate Amongst Youth?
**Bhubaneswar:** Over the last three years, there is a rise in murder, rape, dacoity and robbery in the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. But the reason behind this may be scary.
Talking on twin city crime, Commissioner of Police Satyajit Mohanty informed, “In 2018, there were 50 cases registered under NDPS Act, whereas 83 persons were arrested in this regard. Around 1,237 kgs of ganza, 898 gms of brown sugar, a car, 12 mobile phones and a cash of Rs 6,54,440 have been seized from them. As the drugs are related to petty crimes like robbery and snatching, we will focus on it.”
Experts say that the drug addicts need to obtain money to feed their habit, which lead to petty thefts like pick pocketing, chain and mobile snatching, etc. And some of the youth have been caught in the trap of drugs.
Well known psychologist Pratap Rath said, “The rebellious youth is easily lured by drugs and alcohol as they always search for a ‘kick’ in their life. Moreover, they are able to procure this stuff easily. Under the influence of this, youth get dependent and addicted easily. Then to get easy money, they get into criminal activities when their mental stability is not at its best.”
Last week, a 30-yr-old drug peddler was arrested near Big Bazaar area of Bhubaneswar’s Patia which is the hub of a top engineering college. The Excise Intelligence IIC Baijayanti Panda had opined that the peddlers are operating more near the colleges and students are increasingly caught in their trap.
Over the past few years, there have been several cases of college students being caught either taking drugs or peddling them. A great danger lurks in the State as young minds become easy targets and addicts of the psychotropic substances. Only with maturity and constant surveillance by authorities, the phenomenon can be kept in check.
“We, the society, need to guide the youth properly. Only good quality education can lead to better mental growth and subsequently prevent such activities,” the psychologist concluded.
