Cuttack: In a big relief to cine star turned MP Anubhav Mohanty, the Orissa High Court today put a stay on the non-bailable warrant (NBW) against him issued by a lower court in connection with a domestic violence case.
The BJP leader and MP challenged the order of JMFC-MP/MLA court in the High Court.
“The High court has put a stay on the NBW issued by the lower court against MP and BJP leader Anubhav Mohanty. The court also issued notice to opposite party Varsha Priyadarshini by speed post. The court has posted the matter to July 8 for next hearing,” Anubhav’s lawyer Pitambar Acharya said.
“We drew the attention of the court that Anubhav is one of the star campaigners of BJP and he will campaign for the party in the ongoing elections. Secondly, his mother’s health condition is not well and he had taken her to New Delhi for treatment. He had also sought time to appear in the court for the reason. But the lower court issued the NBW without taking the reality into account,” Acharya added.
The JMFC MP/MLA court had issued NBW against Anubhav Mohanty on May 13.
The NBW was issued in connection with a four-year-old domestic violence case registered against him by his now-divorced wife Varsha Priyadarshini.
The court had issued the warrant after Mohanty failed to appear before it for the second time and asked the police to execute the NBW by May 23.
The Orissa High Court in December last year granted divorce to Mohanty from his wife Varsha Priyadarshini.
