Bhubaneswar: Taking a strict note of disbursement of expired medicines to patients on several occasions, the Health and Family Welfare Department has issued an advisory for management of expired drugs at Government-run hospitals.
In a letter to the authorities of Capital Hospital, Rourkela General Hospital, Suprintendents of Medical Colleges and CDM & PHOs of all districts, the Director of Health Services has sought strict adherance of the advisory.
The Health Department’s advisory noted that expiry date of all medicines in the medical facility’s inventory must be rechecked before dispensing. “The provision of e-Niramaya in inventory management must be followed so that expired drugs cannot be issued to facility or patients,” it added.
The Director of Health Services further stated that suitable instructions should be given to persons handling medicines and a training programme will be organised to guide the personnel dealing with inventory of drugs. The advisory listed other crucial points to ensure that expired drugs are disposed as per protocol and not dispensed to patients, reports stated.
